Seeking Order

Selection of abstract paintings. Acrylic on canvas and board, 2018 - present. This set of squared compositions were done over an intense period in my life. My mother was becoming increasingly frail and we were all struggling through the COVID19 experience. I was looking for a way to control and order both my approach to abstract, expressive painting and my thoughts and emotions. I took a lot of inspiration from the most famous modernists, particularly their use of the grid formats and compositions. I also tried to pare back the colour so that a viewer would react more to the textures, layers and marks. With a couple of these pieces, I think I got as close as I ever have to being the artist I wanted to be when I was at art school.
